Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL Certificates

A Multi-Domain SSL certificate, also known as a UCC, Unified Communications certificate, or SAN certificate, is a type of certificate that uses Subject Alternative Names (SANs) to secure multiple host names. Any number of different domain names can be included in the SAN field of the certificate enabling the certificate to work on any of the included domain names. For example, you could get one Multi-Domain SSL Certificate to cover all of the following:

  • mydomain.com
  • mail.mydomain.com
  • autodiscover.mydomain.com
  • anotherdomain.com

This can provide significant cost savings in many situations. A Multi-Domain Certificate is also required for certain features in Microsoft's Exchange Server, Office Communications Server, and Live Communications Server. We've collected the details of all the best Multi-Domain SSL Certificates and compared them below.

More about Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL Certificates

Multi-Domain SSL Certificates have changed a lot over the years. Originally created to support several new Microsoft platforms, they started with the term Unified Communications or UCC. Since the additional hostnames were added to the Subject Alternative Names field in the certificate, many providers used the term SAN certificate and then eventually Multi-Domain Certificate. They can be used to secure many Microsoft features like OWA, Autodiscovery, ActiveSync, Outlook Anywhere or to simply secure several hostnames with a single certificate.

Some providers can include wildcards in the SAN field or issue an EV Multi-Domain Certificate.
