I bought a code signing certificate using my business name in 2012, all they needed was a bank statement with my business name on it, there is no government registry of business names in the UK. Everything was fine. After a year I tried to renew the certificate. They told me I couldn't use the business name as it was not government registered. I had to use my personal name. Now when anyone tries to run an installer with that name on it, Windows blocks it because it is not recognised. In my opinion all this code signing business is simply blackmail. Buy a certificate or no-one can install your software.
