Dishonest to require more expenses after initial purchase

Product: Code Signing Certificate

Where does one start describing the experience of buying a code signing certificate from Comodo? I would say that it is like pulling teeth from a dragon. 40 days it took from the day of payment to the day it was grudgingly sent to me. This is after 33 emails (16 me to them, 17 them to me), yes 33 ! To list the main specific complaints: 1. I chose Comodo because they were the cheapest. Nowhere do they say that you are going to have to spend far more money than the purchase price, and the purchase price is just a beginning. This is DISHONEST in the extreme and I would say FRAUDULENT. The purchase cost me $71, and ended up costing a total of $321 ! 2. After the purchase they give out links to download the quite complicated forms. These involve getting a notary to certify copies of passport, bank and utility documents and to certify that you are you – fair enough, they have to be proper copies. In Australia the police are licenced for the notarization of certified copies, and that’s who I got to do it. You then have to fax Comodo a copy, and then mail them the copy. Apparently they do not understand that every one used email these days! 3. After chasing them up a 2 weeks later, they claimed that they did not receive the fax (I had seen the confirmation page that the fax was sent successfully), and claimed they did not receive the letter. What bad luck, or was it just LIES? 4. I emailed a copy of the documents as an attachment, and they replied that the “the documents which you have provided seems to be damaged one”. Not that the file was corrupted, or unreadable, but the documents were “damaged” (one). This is despite copying myself at a different address, and there was no “damage” in the file. Was this another LIE? In the email they asked the “documnet” be sent again. 5. I re-faxed, re-posted, re-emailed the documents, and then they introduced the brand new requirement that the Notary had listed to be on a page that they could search on the Internet. This had never been mentioned before. Of course the individual Police Officer who had notarized it was not listed on a specific page, so Comodo did not accept him. You could fair say enough – but only if this was all specified previously, not after the job is done! 6. So I had to find a notary that was listed on a webpage they had (the email said “please get sign from registered notary public”). The prices these guys charged ranged from $250 to $400! Nowhere on the Comodo site does it even hint that you will have to pay extra for a Notary. So I go through this trouble and $250 expense and the documents are faxed and mailed off again. I also emailed a copy which might have quickened things a little because it was only a week later that they ask me what is the best time for them to ring up the notary to check that he is really a notary! Not only do they want a notary to check that I am me, and that my documents are my documents, and that he is a notary, and that they can see he is a notary by sitting on their bums and checking the internet, but they want to ring him up and ask him if he really notarized it! And they want me to ring him up to arrange a time, rather than them ringing him up to arrange a time! Remember, this is another brand new requirement, not mentioned before. 7. So I tell them to call him between 11am and 3pm Melbourne Australia time GMT +11hr, on weekdays. Comodo also wanted a time to call me (yet ANOTHER new requirement which had not been specified at any time earlier). I stated 6pm to 10pm Melbourne Australia time GMT +11hr. I offered to calculate the local time that would be for them, but not knowing where they were I could not. Two days later I chase them up. They say that they called the Notary but he “refused to confirm the signature”. I ring up the Notary, and he says that this is a LIE, and they have never called him or his secretary. As he takes his job very seriously, he in fact is very cross that these people are lying about him. I email Comodo back with this allegation and their STORY changes to “We made a call to the notary but he left for the day” (I have no information on why the secretary did not support this latest claim, but you might guess). 8. After four more days and I chase them, and they say they called the Notary. Hoorah!!! Now they want to know what time they could call me to verify that I am me (apparently they did not trust the passport, the bank statement, and utility bill, that I am in the White Pages phone directory, the Notary, the notary being on a website, or what the Notary told them in a phone conversation). I naturally pointed out that I have already told them the time to call (6pm to 10pm Melbourne Australia time GMT +11hr). They said that they had tried to call me twice, but there was no answer. Another LIE - I am sure as I was home every evening that week, and no one rang. 9. The next day my wife rang me up to say that these people, who she could barely understand, called me at home at 12 noon. Obviously I was at work, not home. They were Comodo people, from which country, and what intelligence I cannot say. I immediately emailed Comodo and pointed out (a little sarcastically) that for the third time they could ring 6pm to 10pm Melbourne Australia time GMT +11hr. 10. This is just about the end, after exactly 40 days, I was rung up at the right time, struggled to understand the English spoken (approximately), stated I was me, and the code signing certificate was finally delivered. All I can say is never again, and I would never suggest people use any company that charges $71 and doesn’t tell you upfront about the other $250 you will have to spend. Fraudulent, incompetent, illiterate and dishonest.

Product: EV SSL

We purchased a 2 year EV Multi Domain SSL certificate back in 2012. On purchasing this, the sales rep offered an additional year, for free, in order to be competitive with other offers I had received. I took him up on the deal and continued with the signup. After a difficult installation period and trouble communicating through various departments via contact forms, overseas departments and knowledge bases, we finally managed to get the certificate installed and working. When we came to add a second domain to the certificate a year later, we once again had to jump through hoops, as this was not made clear how to install. Eventually we managed to complete this after several days of emails with support. Now to 2014. We received an advanced warning that the SSL certificate was due to expire, so I queried this with the rep who told me that the certificate was a 2 year certificate, and to get the third year free, we would need to submit a new CSR to obtain a renewed single year certificate. After doing this, I was sent a new certificate to install on our server which was duly done. On the 01/02/2014 the certificate ran out. Not just the old one, but the new one too. Because the new one was not in fact new, but the same old replacement certificate! Our website has now been unsecured and had been losing customers and orders for two days. Having queried this with support, I was put through to sales who wanted me to buy a new certificate. After explaining that I would not be buying another certificate, they arranged for me to place an incomplete order, which accounts would 'zero', in order to put the sale through. I found this very frustrating, and after several communications, was still being told that the best thing would be to buy a new certificate. After receiving no confirmation of order, nor any more communication, I chased the rep who's tone became aggressive, and was still advising that buying a certificate would be the quickest solution. I still have no valid SSL certificate and feel like the position of power that Comodo has over our company at the present time is being abused by certain members of staff. I assume that sales of SSL certificates are done on commission, hence the overbearing pressure for me to renew as opposed to Comodo fixing the problem by issuing the certificate which we have already paid for. I find this complete process a shambles and as such cannot see how Comodo can possibly expect me, or anyone else to want renew an SSL certificate with them after receiving such atrociously poor service.

It was my first EV SSL order I placed, and it will be the last time I use Comodo's EV SSL. I would GLADLY pay 200-500$ MORE for a EV SSL that would be delivered quickly and that would meet my CSR and RSA key! Furthermore, they provided me with a certificate that had a TYPOS in the company's name!! Therefore, the little Green bar in the browser's url bar would not show the correct name... -_-' What's the use of a EV SLL certificate if the name shown is not even the same as the website?! Their 1 888 phone number for support doesn't EVEN WORK!!!! Geez.... Please, do business with another SSL company then comodo!!!!

My EV cert was going to expire in less than a month. I have an online shopping cart. I received no warning whatsoever that it was expiring. Instead, I just happened to notice that the 2-year cert was expiring. I contacted Comodo 21 days ago and paid at that time for a new 2-year EV cert. They haven't even verified my phone number yet. I have emailed them repeatedly asking them what the delay is, but my cert now expires in 5 days. This is bullshit. I would never recommend Comodo to anyone.

Failure on every level

Purchased a SSL from Comodo, and the verification process began. However, the phone number listed by Dun & Bradstreet for my firm was wrong (however, not phone number listed on Google, my website, or any of the legal directories I am listed in: they all match my application). So, I call to straighten the situation out. The call center drone I talked to wanted me to register with one of several white pages sites, correct the D&B information, etc. I fixed D&B's info (which required a registration, but okay they are D&B), but they also say it could take "up to 6 weeks" to fix the listing. The white pages sites were sketchy looking to me, and the first one whitepages.com, wanted money to fix my listing. I am buying a SSL for SECURITY!!! I am not giving my information to companies I don't trust. The support line would not deviate from their script. They would not transfer me to a supervisor or level two support, or ANY one that could help. I finally asked that they fix the problem today, tell me how to fix it today, or refund my money today. The support staff then told me to send an email to a refund email address. No. Fix it or refund it. If you cannot do that, you are not a support line; you are a useless line. So, now the process begins to get my money back. Use someone else, they aren't worth the trouble.

I wish I'd read these reviews before buying from Comodo

You might think buying a code signing certificate would be a straight forward process; you fill in the information they ask for, and hand over your money. They verify you have the authority to obtain the certificate and send it to you. Right? Not right. I didn't bother to look for reviews until things started to go wrong. So far, no certificate, just a series of emails back and forth in which they refer over and over to a different web domain that has nothing to do with the order. Every time I tell them that the domain they are referring to has nothing to do with the order they just ignore me. The emails are all in broken english which makes it hard to understand, and I'm guessing they probably aren't understanding me either.

Perfect for my needs, 5years SSL for less than $40, you just can argue with that. We did once have an Extended Verification SSL for a year, but found people are not as interested in it as the SSL providers would have you believe.

I am amazed this company is still in operation considering the horrible experience I have had trying to validate our EV SGC SSL certificate. For validation purposes they would only use a number that relates to our contact centre to talk with one of our board of directors. They would never call at the times stated. Contact centre was either closed or they confused the contact centre rep as the could not understand the comodo rep due to horrible connection. I also tried calling them, was like having a conversation with somebody in another room the connection was that bad. Comodo somehow managed to obtain board member's mobile number and have been constantly calling him to validate at all hours of the day with no consideration of the time difference between whenever they are and NZ. This has been going on for a couple of weeks so advised via online chat that we wanted to cancel the order. Comodo have been told 5 times online to stop calling board member, but they still persist. Please avoid these guys like the plague. They are truly awful

it can take over 65 mail and some phonecalls to get things moving they are quite cheap, but their site is unclear and as a returning customer to renew cert is is horrible, unvlear direction, to say the least. pay first and solve all later is normal for me. had Symantec before and that was so much easier, but also 4 tiems more expensive, but time is money..

Amazing technical support team. They solved my complex issue in minutes. I'm not a tech wizard. Obviously, I was lost with the interface. I had a huge issue, at least according to me, while installing my instant SSL certificate. Guess there was something wrong with the file name and the special characters used in it. The support team instantly responded to my query, sorted out my issue in minutes and I became an extremely happy patron of Comodo certs.

Very responsive technical team helped me get it running on my Apache server. Initially, there were few issues to be sorted out but the support lent by the reps from the certificate authority got it under control. Quick issuance and very cost efficient. I would recommend it for every business owner who seeks cheap yet reliable SSL solution.

I bought a code signing certificate using my business name in 2012, all they needed was a bank statement with my business name on it, there is no government registry of business names in the UK. Everything was fine. After a year I tried to renew the certificate. They told me I couldn't use the business name as it was not government registered. I had to use my personal name. Now when anyone tries to run an installer with that name on it, Windows blocks it because it is not recognised. In my opinion all this code signing business is simply blackmail. Buy a certificate or no-one can install your software.

I ordered on Friday that the cert issue was urgent so we could publish an urgent software update. They responded but were very slow to respond over the next couple days. My time is worth more than the cost savings of their discounted certificate vs a full price certificate. I went with digicert (on Sunday) and asked them to issue urgently. Although their helpdesk is closed on Sundays, I was surprised to receive a response almost immediately that it's being processed and requesting our phone bill to confirm the telephone number. Comodo demanded they call me at our main company phone number. Since when does a CEO answer a main company phone line. they just don't get it, and certainly do not value my time as much as I do.

One of our certificates took several MONTHS to be reissued when a change was required. On another certificate, when we went to renew early they were unable to set the expiration date correctly to avoid shorting us time, even after 4 tries. For contrast, another company we use was able to do a renewal without a new CSR and not only did the get the expiration date correct, but they added a couple bonus months for renewing early.
